Their son has been using them for two years. Everyone has finally agreed he needs treatment, and now they’re scrolling through centre after centre. Every website says “best,” “trusted,” “guaranteed.” Nobody at the table knows what to ask.

That’s the moment this post is for. Whichever centre you call, a few honest questions will tell you more than any brochure.

Who Is Actually Looking After Patients?

Skip the photos for a minute and ask about people. Is there a doctor on the team? A psychiatrist? Who is on duty at night, when cravings and withdrawal hit hardest?

Then ask how many patients each counsellor handles. If one person is juggling thirty, individual therapy is mostly a promise on paper. You want to hear real numbers, given without hesitation.

What Happens During Detox?

Withdrawal isn’t the same for everyone. Alcohol and some drugs can cause seizures or severe confusion, and that’s not something to manage with home remedies or guesswork. Ask who supervises detox, what medicines are used, and what the plan is if someone’s condition suddenly worsens.

Also ask what happens the day after detox ends. Clearing the body is only the first step. The reasons the person started using are still there, and a centre that stops at detox has done maybe a fifth of the work.

What Does a Normal Day Look Like?

“Counselling and therapy” can mean anything, so ask for the actual timetable. When do patients wake up? How much of the day is one-to-one counselling, group sessions, yoga or exercise, and how much is just waiting around?

Structure matters more than most families realise. People in early recovery do badly with empty hours. A good routine gives the day a shape, and that shape slowly gives a person their footing back.

Beyond the Habit: Understanding the Person and Their Struggles

Many people who use drugs are also carrying depression, anxiety, old trauma or grief they’ve never talked about. Treat only the substance, and those problems often push the person straight back to it.

Ask whether new patients get a mental health assessment when they arrive, and whether a psychiatrist is available if one is needed. Notice how the first conversation goes. If staff ask about sleep, mood and what happened in the years before the addiction, that’s a good sign.

How Long Will the Stay Be, and Who Decides?

Nobody can promise that a person will be “cured” in seven days or even in one month. Length of stay depends on the substance, how long it was used, physical health and how the person responds.

The useful question is who decides the timeline and on what basis. The answer should involve an assessment and regular review, never a fixed package chosen for the centre’s convenience.

What Will It Cost in Writing?

Money is awkward to raise when you’re scared, but do it anyway. Ask for a written list of what’s included: room, food, medical supervision, medicines, tests, counselling. Then ask what costs extra and what happens if the stay gets extended.

A centre confident in its work will explain its fees plainly. If the answers are foggy and the pressure to pay today is heavy, take that as information.

Can You Visit Before Deciding?

If you live in Ghaziabad or nearby, go and see it. Look at the rooms and the kitchen. Watch how staff speak to patients. Does the place feel calm and respectful, or tense?

If you can’t go, ask for a live video walkthrough. Any centre that refuses to show you where your family member will sleep and eat isn’t one to trust.

Where Do Families Fit In?

Recovery doesn’t happen inside a locked room while the family waits outside. Ask how often you’ll receive updates, when calls and visits are allowed, and whether there’s family counselling.

Parents and spouses often need help too. Many have spent years lending money, covering lies and walking on eggshells. Learning to change that pattern is often what keeps the recovery going once the person is home.

What If He Wants to Leave on Day Three?

It happens all the time. Shame, cravings and fear make the first week the hardest. Ask how the team handles this moment. The right answer is patient conversation and counselling. Anything involving threats, humiliation or force is a serious red flag.

Picture a family sitting around a dining table in Indirapuram.
